Music For The Day

Piano Concerto in G by Maurice Ravel, first movement, performed here by Leonard Bernstein conducting from the piano.

Not my favourite interpretation of the piece, but any chance to see Lenny performing is always good.

I really like Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G. However, the first movement seems too playful for me most of the time; I much prefer the second movement, which is more romantic.

I like this idea for a blog post, by the way. I’m doing the same thing for the classical music blog that I started the other day, Opus Eleven.

      Thanks for commenting!

I love both of Ravel’s piano concertos (this one, and the one for the left hand), but of the two this is my favourite. I actually quite like the quirky nature of the first movement, beginning with the whip, and the sparkling opening piano lines, before the darker, sultry jazz influence takes effect. I think it contrasts really well with the second movement which, as you say, is very romantic and serene.

I’m always on the lookout for new classical music recordings to discover, or interesting music criticism, so I will be sure to check out your blog!

      Cheers,

      Sam

I don’t know whether you’re a fan of Japanese anime, or not, but there’s a great series called Nodame Cantabile. It’s all about classical music, giving you great insights into new pieces and composers to listen to. Just a thought…
